Biotechnology Education
In
India the importance of Biotechnology was realized in
1982 when the Science Advisory Committee to the
Cabinet recommended setting-up of the National
Biotechnology Board
(NBTB) under the Department of Science and
Technology jointly supported by the Department of
Atomic Energy (DAE), Indian Council of Agricultural
Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),
and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
In 1986, a separate Department of Biotechnology
(DBT) was set up with a modest budget which continues
to increase steadily.

It is not only the annual Budget of DBT that has
steadily increased over the years, the potential of
generating revenues through biotech industries is
estimated to touch US$ 5 Billion mark with 1 million
jobs according to The National Biotechnology
Development Strategy presented by the Shri Kapil Sibal
the Minister of Science
& Technology on 31st March 2005.
There are presently 200 industries and the total
investment during 2003-04 has reached US$137 million.
Sector-wise, the pharma market occupies 76%, bio-agri
8.24%, bio-services 7.70%, industrial products 5.50%
and bio-informatics 2.45%.
The
academic activities in education and research too has
taken a great leap forward. The National Biotechnology
Development Strategy estimates about 50, 000 students
qualifying annually in this field. It also estimates
that there are presently over 300 institutions
offering education in biotechnology related subjects.
This number seems to be increasing every day.
Unfortunately such institutions are concentrated only
in a few cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and
Hyderabad. Hence the job opportunities are also
unevenly distributed in these cities at present
leading to many of the aspirants seeking positions
abroad.
